Collapse of competitive gaming scene?

In the (not so distant) past, in the days following a large WH40K tournament the related blog-sphere were full of excitement, discussions, and list analysis. This year the Nova Open went by and ... practically nothing. No posts, no lists, no discussions. I was surprised, but then I've seen the list of winners... Tau/Eldar, Eldar/Tau, Tau/Tau... and this post (see discussion below the main text):

Very sad. At least, those new miniatures are better and better quality designs... and they do not require a codex for standing in a display cabinet...

  1. I've kind of noticed this as well. I was hoping for a bit more info and coverage of the nova.

  2. I've felt the same since 6th came out - serious lack of posts after both NOVA last year and the past two Adepticons, and more than a few other decent sized tournaments since last fall. I think this year's post-NOVA count is pretty amazing though. From live-updated battle results and army win percentages on TorrentofFire, the great battles on UStream, to Dakka and other forum batreps and multiple threads discussing some aspect or another. There have been several blogs with pic dumps and more with 1-2 paragraph battle summaries. Give it a little - it has been only a week. Plus, Stelek is hardly relevant to 40k at this point, let alone a tournament he wasnt present at. His history of whining after NOVA speaks for itself.

    1. So, maybe my impression of poor coverage is not true. One big factor here are these live-streamed videos, which are very nice... if you have time for watching. I am probably wrong, looking for written stories; it's just me preferring books then movies... :-)

    1. You did post but technically it was the invitational not the open.

    2. Thanks for the link, nice reading even if short. I have seen your list in the comments/discussion on YTTH, and I like it much more than Tauzilla-x-4 of your opponent in the final game.
Stelek often is irritating, likes whining and "stirring muddy water", but many times I found his opinions worthy discussion.

    3. Yeah. He is a friend even though we are on opposite sides of the 40k world. Ty for a nice response.

  4. I think the lack of list talk on the blogosphere is not a sign of a collapse of competitive 40k. There are more big GTs than there ever were and none of them have trouble selling out. What I do think this is a symptom of is the nature of the edition and also of the blogosphere. The meta is 6th is kind of crazy and all of the options out there can make match-ups as important as any other aspect of play, so it makes discussing tactics or lists a little rough because at the end of the day, there aren't many straight up Take All Comer lists in a literal sense due to extreme lists being prevelent. Then on the blogging side of the house, list posts rarely yeild healthy discussion and also a mature blogoshpere (many of us have been at this a while) has kind of said whatever they wanted to say about game play a while ago or is tired of talking about it due to the aforemention discussions ... so while it may seem like it from the outside, it certainly isn't collapsing, the blogosphere just isn't babbling the way we used to.

    1. Well, very good point. Tbh, I intentionally tried to provoke discussion, upon reading this "the end of all days" post at YTTH. Problem (or straight, inability) with constructing all comer list in current edition has been expressed by Stelek (and probably others) long time ago, but it seems that new codices only emphasize this trend.
