To 3D or not to 3D, that is the question

Recent advances in computer modeling software and 3D printing technology, together with improved resin casting and cheaper plastic processing, are having huge influence on our miniature hobby. On one hand, smaller companies (often involving single or a few persons) are able to deliver models showing exceptional level of details without investing tens of thousand USD. On the other hand, many models started to give me (you?) a taste of excessive similarity...a "made by machine" feelings"... I suppose, this will lead to a new kind of miniature collector, who is looking only for human-hand sculpted models. Maybe they are already among us...What is your opinion on this?

Disdainful from Capture and Control blog has posted the pictures taken during constructing his new (now finally-official) Stormraven. As so many other people, I do not like this model too much, but looking over the different construction stages, I have seen these photos:

So, what is basically making SR ugly for me is the top intake and turret - without them the model is already OK. Sure, you can go further and try improving its wing design - a plenty of possibilities, starting from angle or placement modification to complete exchange for Valkyrie wings, this needs testing with actual model in hands.

I'm planning to extend the hull by adding Valkyrie troop compartment, which I got cheaply from US eBay. Not sure about the result (it may be too big) but worthy to try...

There was a time when I preferred metal figures, because they were just better looking, more detailed, ect. But recent progress in plastic processing simply killed most of these arguments. plastic models are similarly detailed while are much easier for modifications. Thus, I really enjoy an announcement of new plastic Warhammer demons... even if, I already purchased resin Thunderwolves and do not need these Bloodcrushers so much...

Thunderwolves models - once again

Maybe a little old topic but I just returned to this problem. What to choose for my T-Wolves cavalry? Not interested in joke-conversions, like Marines on Chaos Warhounds, I dug again the net to get something fast and ready. None of these choices below is perfect, but all are acceptable...

1) MrDandy offers a resin set which obviously want to match the look of Canis model. At moderate price you are getting one big advantage - each model is different just from the box, no converting necessary. I strongly advise changing the chinchilla-like tails to the regular wolfy ones.

2) Paulson Games just start offering set of 3 resin models. They are differ in concept from those mentioned above and because total cost (models + shipment) is very similar, it is purely a matter of taste, which set is better.

3) eBay seller irina_est from St. Petersburg (Russia) has two T-wolves at 32 USD apiece. The models shows nice Space Wolves iconografy, not beating about the bush, and each have its own scenic base, but this option is clearly most expensive and still the wolves muzzles are not perfect.

4) Another eBay seller from Russia, mrs-velard has maybe most regular-wolfy proposition, without admixing a monstrous character. The model is the cheapest one from all these, but comes as a single pose. This problem can be partly fixed by cutting the head and repositioning it a little and, by cutting and closing the bottom jaw. Unfortunately, both modifications require re-sculpting the fur at cutting place - small task for some, but big one for the others.

(UPDATE) Now, Paulson Games sells separate wolf heads. Maybe useful to convert this Russian model.

5) Micro Art Studio has two wolf models, now. Very interesting but they do not include saddle nor marine-type legs (but they said at their forum that they are working to offer some in the future).

The only thing which can stop me from from buying ten of these is a current (predicted) switch in WFB metagame to a large infantry blocks domination. So, maybe I will stay with five only....

Buying (semi)custom dice for my Orks can be an expensive bussines. I just follow The Vanus Temple in the craziness of orky-designed D6 dice purchase. With added shipping cost to Spain, they will be around 1 Euro per piece, but I ordered enough that after re-selling the excess my cost will drop to 1 USD/each or even less.

Latest Blood Angel codex gives some nice alternatives for khornate Chaos SM armies. Saying this, I'm preparing my own iteration, using some of the models picked up during last Christmas shopping fever.
As typical in such a case, I really had no clear plan for them, but now I'm going with 2ooo pts mech-type list. It has an obvious flaw against assault-heavy armies, but what is BA-related force without one :-). Usually, I like to have a lot of folks in my marines armies and this list will give me some change.
At the moment, it is as following:

Librarians are giving psychic protection (hood and Shield of Sanguinus), as well as some offensive option (Blood Lance or Force Weapon).

Terminators are riding in Stormraven with Furioso, but should disembark quickly as SR is definitely not a Landrider (Av 12 vs 14, respectively). Both, Termis and Dread models from Forgeworld.

Troops are typical mech spam, but as they don't have staying power of Plaguemarines, maybe I will swap 2 squads for one big going with power-fisted Sergeant in a Rhino. Another option is to drop only one squad but include powerfist as a sixth body to the rest. Forgeworld models for dudes and transports.

Fast Attack choice is easy. I just have to do small conversions and to magnetize weapon options.

Vindicators I already have from some 3-in-a-box bargain, and they need finally affiliation.

Stormraven will be created from a mix of Landrider and Valkyrie bits, in a way similar to Spikey Bits approach.

In more distant future I want to expand this force to something more versatile. This will include few special characters and some jump-packed squads. The pictures below shows my ideas for HQ choices.

GW just presents new plastic Boar Boyz and they are fantastic for me! These new boars are refreshing and brings back some humorous feel to the Orks, still being scary enough to fit rest of your force.

All three sprues are below. Look at these new screaming ork heads, they are very nice.

They will release also new River Trolls. Now vomit attack is no longer exclusive to GameZone models :-). I have to take a second look to decide if like them more then old ones, but it is definitely a surprise to see them, as the metal ones were still very good looking (much better then stone trolls).

And speaking about the trolls... Gaspez-Arts has a new one chaotic in WIP section, but is already painted, so it should be soon in stock. I suppose for 15 Euros apice (just prediction).

Alternative Minotaurs - appendix A

Alternative Minotaurs - quick look

With a release of new army book Beastmen lost many monsters (like Shaggoth or Dragon Ogres in general). Instead, they got these plastic Minotaurs, which many regard as controversial models. Personally, I see obvious flaws of these figures, but I'm also far from rejecting them. It is just one of this cases, when the sculpt is not enough good to make "auto-win" mini, but everything depends on painting. You can hide the flaws with your brush, or grave the model completely, and this will be much more pronounced than for other sculpts.
So, for those who do not like new plastics, I did some CMoN/Google search and below are some alternative (non-GW) miniatures. Definitely, it is not a complete range, and to be honest, I even did not go through all CMoN "minotaur" pictures.
(Minis are in random order - no offense to any artist ;-).

To tell the truth, I jumped the idea without real plan, how to make them. Generally, wheel has to be outside and bike frame inside ;-) with a rider but "devil sits within details", as they say in Poland.

My way to gather a WH40K army...

As the work-related stress is building up towards the end of the year, I feel that Santa will go something serious this Christmas. I have a wish-list for him which should darken his way-to-bright red costume...

This Ultraforge model should make nice centerpiece of the army. It´s cheaper and (probably) more compact than ForgeWorld version, and I definitely have to have it.

The real brain of the force - even if bloody twisted. Exceptionally nice helmet, of course, if you like horns-and-teeth style of your ChSM models. Speaking of which, I will go for the next strongly climatic point of the force.

FW Demon Prince and herald. Low "tech" index and high "fantasy" feelings will make nice counter-point to Rhinos or Vindicators (for example).

These two beasts are the reason that I started lookin towards khorante miniatures. I like them, I'll buy them, punto. They are not very big, so directly can be used as Dreads, and upon mounting on some scenic base (mostly to increase hight) also as Defilers or Soulgrinders.

FW khornate marines are bread-and-butter of the army. 2 x 10 in Rhinos will satisfy my needs. The question will be the legs - standard or from possessed? It is important because the actual Possessed models with wings will make khornate Raptors squad.

An alternative is to use standard Raptors which are very descent models too, but I fall in love for possessed some time ago and want to use them.
Next, chaos Terminators from FW - not so nice like their power-armored companions but still acceptable, especially in helmet-less version.

Finally, I have to fit this old bloody-hand individual.

So, now we have defined a nice core of the army. Then, let's look into the Book for point-cost and try to make them playable, filling with some regular stuff up to given points limit (whatever it will be)...

This year GW decided to kill Polish edition of Golden Daemon contest. I'm not going into complaining why they did this and so on. It's their event and their right... To counter bad impact this decision could have on painters community, some more active people started an independent contest - Slayer of Daemons. And now you can take a look at the results of the first edition.

These are definitely nice works and I hope the event will be continued in the future.

Another option for SW Thunderwolf cavalry - a miniature from Russia available (sometimes) through eBay for 12 USD (plus s&h). While the painting style of display model is rather unfortunate, the mini itself is very interesting.

I think, this model is better then original Fangir from GW Canis Wolfborn set, but still not enough dynamic. If this would be set of three T-wolves, with second one charging and third one maybe even jumping, I would be very content. Easy to say, I know... but maybe possible.

Resin models from Eolith Miniatures

Some miniatures from Eolith Minis. They are partly new sculpts but partly re-editions of old Spyglass figures. Just from beginning, this things are rather for collectors than players. They are very detailed but also very tiny, except the barbarian. I did a size comparison with Sebastian model from Hasslefree (on far right, with a torch), as their figures come to mind immediately when you see Eolith resins.

Below are some close-ups.
Barbarian is the biggest one and can easily compare with respective model from Avatars of War.

Casting quality is good, the single issue which I've seen is indicated in the photo below, and can be moderately difficult to clean.

Finally, my favorite model from this set.

Some interesting Dwarves and more

Another new (or re-newed) miniatures company - Dwarf Tales from Poland. They started promoting their own game system Warcanto, of which I don't know anything, but you can check their website here and here.
For the moment I just looked at their Dwarf miniatures and they are really interesting.

A second promising race are their Orks. They are enough familiar to be accepted and enough distinct to stand out over the crowd.

Third race, tribesmen-werewolves, looks little weaker (for me).

Additionally, three other races are expected to appear - Elves, Men and Chaos/Demon Dwarves (kind of).
All these looks very promising even if not very cheap (in my opinion std man-size mini should not be over 5USD, but maybe I'm from Scotland).

Brutal - new game, new miniatures

Dark Art Miniatures recently announced their new game - Brutal. In fact currently, these are some new miniatures for sale, as an actual game seems to be still in development.

There isn't much to say at the moment. Minis are quite nice but also rather expensive, taking into account that for my purposes, they could be used only as a kind of acolytes, servitors or cultists.

Many people are looking these days for good miniature to convert an average Space Wolf marine into mighty Thunderwolf rider. To address this problem, Mortimer at Cytadela.pl used a decent wolf model from Hordes, namely Circle Orboros Laris. The result is below, more photos here.

I don't know why but I always have an impression that Vampire heroes are like Space Marines - there is never enough of them! Saying this, I bought two more miniatures and soon will be like one guy who complained that for each regiment of skeletons or zombies, he has one Vampire character...

Italian Bullcentaurs - do you like old Chaos Dwarves?

Looking through Gaspez-Art web-store, I found two models of Chaos Dwarfs Bullcentaurs.

They are definitely much better than those ancient models (see below) from GW were, but I'm still not fully satisfied with them.

The problem is that they are too much in the style of old Ch. D. models. I have no idea, how will be Forge World models for this army in the future, but I can bet that design will be definitely modern. If you want look to the Scibor Miniatures' Moscals project.

How to use new Skaven Doomwheel?

I like most of the WFB models, but Skavens have never been appealing to me... except for Screaming Bell and Doomwheel.
Now, the latter model will appear in plastic, giving possibilities to use it for other armies... very other. Look at the sprues on BOLS and at the pictures below and feel free to propose, how to use them for converting.

BOLS post contains two propositions up to now:
"GIGANTIC TYRES FOR MY ORK MONSTER TRUKKS" and
"Kroot Jungle Warwheels!".

But what about other armies, any ideas?

Space Wolves 4-x-Rune-Priest Perfect Build

Ha, ha... the title is a joke, intended to increase a little your blood pressure before reading.
Below, I will try to construct my incoming Space Wolves force. As a collector, I don't care too much about power-gaming factor. To be honest, I'm not especially counting points; if will be 1.5k, that's OK; if little more, I will equalize to 2000... or 2500... or 3k,whatever...
Having already typical "horde-of-marines" Black Templar army, I wish to go for something more elitist. Moreover, I want to pick cool models and get a lot from new plastic sets (those hundreds of bits!).

So, I will start from taking Logan Grimnar (275 pts) and Njal Stormcaller (270 pts) as my HQ choices. Logan allows to take Wolf Guards as Troops, so they will be accompanied by two squads of Wolfguard Terminators. As both heroes together already sucked 550 pts, I believe that both Termi units should be rather cheap. They will get only basic set (StormBolter+PowerWeapon), with an exception for one Chainfist/squad (15 pts).
The main worry for me now - will Logan model be presentable next to the new ones (Njal and plastics)? Two pictures which I found on GW website do not give a definite answer.

In this case I will buy actual models and will make real-world comparison. Why didn't I buy them already? Well, I'm waiting with order placement for Battleforce set which will be for sale on September, 17th and will contains 20 SW marines, 5 regular scouts and a Drop Pod. The Marines are essential to get all these fancy bits and allow me to field one Grey Hunters squad with double-melta joy, and one Blood Claws pack with melta/powerfist. Both squads will get Rhino to grab objectives. The scouts will feed my elite forces (with a little help of already owned miniatures). With melta and 2 x Power Weapon, they should bring some threat to enemy side of the table (even if a bit expensive one, but who care?).
From the modeling point of view, I lean towards totally helmet-less army (all these wild heads plus good range from WFB Chaos Marauder Horsemen), but time will show what will be. The bases, I want to make very simple - plain dirt or simple battle debris theme with some snow here and there.
Finally, a good point of all affair will be that these two gentlemen will finally find a home (and some beer with brand new plastic-colleagues).

It seems that there is a lot of heat and tension around recent release of Space Wolves codex. Unfortunately, most of these is generated either, by enthusiasts of expected "killer-codex" or, by angry xenos players despairing at their "overpriced-yet-underpowered" army lists.
So, let me go one step back from the nasty situation and look at some more "juicy" bits from Wolf Guard Terminator set.

The list is not yet complete, but I already went back and forth over my ideas and know what I need.

How to make interesting Rhino for your O. Malleus or O. Xenos Inquisitor? Just put a turret on it! Below is my first attempt to make such vehicle.

GW product you have as a bonus stuff "for free". The other one cost much more (but will not make a hole in your pocket) but is also bigger and more sophisticated.

Making Hydra flak tank (1)

Some months ago, when a preview of Aegis Defence Line set appeared in the Web, I've immediately thought about using its parts as a flak cannons for IG Hydra. Yeah, fast and cheap solution but also little cheap result...
To be clear, I have nothing against Forge World model and could bear the price at current euro/GBP rate, but I like alternatives also.
So, it did not take long until I bought this set:

It is produced by Warforged miniatures and I got mine from D6 Hobbies store. They are well done and details level is satisfactory for either IG or Ork army. The latter however has currently much better option from FW.

They are 18 USD per set, plus s&h, which is rather expensive if you consider necessity of turret construction.
Speaking of turret construction, it should be relatively easy using plasticard and some spare bits. Warforged Miniatures guy showed this somewhere in one post.
But, I decided to check first what Old Crow is offering:

This turret is definitely too small and will fit much better with their original armament (at the back). So, lets go for the another turret:

Second set is much more promising but only if you will stay with one pair of autocannons. If you like to use it with missiles as a Manticore, you should also check this post and the related ones at 42nd Cadian.

Full set of four cannons does not fit, which leaves me unfortunately at starting point... Seems I have to find some time and make a turret from plasticard and bits below:
These are Baneblade side plates and Hellhound back. Not expensive at all, but this time...

Space Wolves marines sprues

Just another photo of new Space Wolves marines sprue. These are very nice details for SW squads although the bits are not so useful for other chapters (unlike Dark Angels or Black Templars), IMO.

From the first sprue, I like an ax and a body front. From the other, a walking legs (knee-pad on one said only) and a skull-decorated shoulder pad.
Additionally, there are many interesting wild heads w/o helmets, which will allow building a very nice Kislevite army for WFB.

Pushing Space Hulk fever - to buy or not to buy

After starting with Space Hulk pre-ordering on last Monday, Games Workshop is pushing hard this action by adding new pictures and articles to their website. I'm stupidly looking at all these pictures and my initial reserve for this project is melting down continuously. First of all, the miniatures are not pre-painted what for sure would prevent me from buying. Instead they are just red and blue plastic which is not a problem. Second, I started to think about this box as a kind of ForgeWorld-like stuff, which sooner or later will justify me the high price. Truly Larry Leadhead said, there is nothing easier than to justify yourself a miniature purchase.

As for a limited character of this release, I never had a problem with it , neither counted for special value of this box after years. If I will buy, I will do this for gaming with friends, most probably replacing the special SH figures with ordinary Termies and Stealers. This brings us to the next point - how unique are this minis, especially BA Terminators? Maybe only until the anticipated BA regular codex release somewhere next year? So, to buy or not? The problem is not Space Hulk itself but a very long list of GW, FW and third party miniatures and boxes waiting for their way to my never-ending collection...

Using Steam Tank body - first try

Trying to use main body of plastic Empire Steam Tank to make some fancy conversion of 40K model.
As previously announced, I got the selected parts and they fit together flawlessly almost like Lego blocks.

First idea was to improve a little bit an outdated Land Raider model ;-). Unfortunately, just from beginning, size comparison of S-Tank body and LR top plate gave lot of doubts. S-Tank seems too large, especially the height is rather significant.

So, for the moment, I hold applying this idea until a) I will build this Land Raider completely and, b) I will check another possibilities.
However, postponing a main body usage doesn't mean anything for the S-Tank turret. I dry-fitted it to the same upper armor plate of LR and it looks fine... But not outstanding/groundbreaking...

I think the main problem (but also advantage) is an angular (I don't have better word) shape of these parts. They seem much better suited for some Imperial Guard models like Chimera or Baneblade, which I'm leaving as a small teaser of forthcoming posts...

New-old piece of terrain, previously included in 40K Macragge box is available from GW online store. It is very nice piece of terrain but the price is little controversial. For 15 GBP you can buy complete smaller vehicle or box of figures.

For 28 GBP one can buy Valkyrie from some independent retailers and build much more original terrains. Or you can buy few bitz of virtually any model at eBay and got similar result for half a price. This however will need much more effort, so as for the announced destroyed Rhino terrain, it is up to you what to choose. At least, we have a choice...

It is always interesting to observe when some Big Fish of our common puddle is starting a new project. Such thing happens today as people at BoLS started a discussion forum - BoLS Lounge. It surely has a potential to be fantastic place but now it equally depends on us - miniature gamers and collectors - as on BoLS crew. In other words, even Microsoft cannot force new Windows if people doesn't like to use it :-). At the moment, I think we should give a chance to this project by joining the forum. This is especially easy for me, as I have never been involved those great forums like The Bolter&Chainsword or DakkaDakka.
Saying this, I joined this forum as MAGILER, but unfortunately my activity there will depend strongly on my constantly shrinking free time.

Plastic Black Knights - a simple idea for WFB Vampires

Simple conversion idea for making plastic Black Knights for WFB Vampire Counts army.
In fact it is almost pure kit-bashing job with one exception, but later about this.

I'm going to start with Tomb Kings skeleton horsemen by cutting riders in half. Exact place for cutting should be adjusted according to the selected torso.

One can name several possible kind of knightly torsos, which can be useful for these models. I've chosen Dark Elves Corsairs fronts paired with back of VC Grave Guard. First reason is that I have these bits at hand, but additionally I intend to emphasize an undead character of the models by showing (at least a little bit of) skeletal chest incorporated in Grave Guard's body-back. However, this skeletal chest is slightly wider than the hollow in Corsair's front armor plate, and this will require some converting effort (cutting/filing). For this reason, we can call this project a conversion :-)

If you prefer to avoid these front-back mismatch, I suggest to use DE Cold One Knights torsos.

Of course, one can go further and use almost complete DE Knights just swapping their heads and hands. At the moment, I don't know if this will require a big adjustment to legs' position.

As for the heads, I will use Grave Guard winged helmets with addition of one Skeleton Warriors head (down- middle). I thought about using some kind of full helmets (e.g. Bretonian knights) but this would make too large disproportion with spindly skeletal legs of the rider.

Additionally, I want to pimp a little bit the horse heads using some feathers-like ornaments from Empire range. These below are Empire knights bits with exception to the last one (Greatswords feather).

Finally, I will give them some nice shields. Being still undecided which ones I wish to use, I selected these 3 possibilities.

As I'm always short on time, I don't expect to see my models completed soon. So, if you have already built such regiment or have pictures of alternative approach to this problem, you can put a link in the comments.

How to use a Steam Tank main body?

Soon (I hope), I will get the following parts of recently released plastic Steam Tank of Empire.

When looking at the complete model, this will be the non-blurred part of the vehicle from the below photo.

To be honest, I bought this bitz without clear idea what to do with them. So next, I would like to list some possibilities asking you about yours opinions.

1) Alternative turret for Baneblade/Hellhammer - will replace the original turret but not cannon.

2) Orks Battlewagon front body - will replace whole driver compartment. The second picture shows stage at which it can be mounted to the chassis. Probably mounted without the ST turret.

3) Land Raider front body replacement or, if it doesn't fit there, the main body upper extention - should be fitted to the top of the model probably without the floor. An open backside needs to be closed somehow.
4) Tzeentchian (does such word exist?) Defiler upper body replacement - as previously, a backside needs to be closed.

So, what would be your decision? Or maybe you have a better idea? Please, let me know in the comment...

Tyranid Trygon from Troll Forge - part 2

Second part of alternative Tyranids Trygon's bits walk-through. This time more complete picture of "what you are getting for your 70 USD". All bits are as-received without any cleaning. Carnifex parts are just for size comparison.

At the moment , I'm happy with this THING. If GW will release a plastic copy of FW Trygon in the future, only the better. In Poland there is an old sentence, saying that "two heads are better than one" (more-less).

Tomb Kings rumors - new Army Book in 2010

Few rumors about Tomb Kings for this time. Just recently, one guy from our local GW store told me that Tomb Kings are going to get new Army Book somewhere in 2010, but no word on precise schedule. The expected changes are going to be focused on re-deploying existing units over the sections of the book, without adding new ones. Also, a bunch of new characters will appear, some of them opening new possibilities for army construction. As for the models, both Skeleton Warriors and Tomb Guards are going to be redesigned, the latter appearing in plastic like recent VC Grave Guard. Additionally, Bone Giant is told to be more potent creature. And that's all, not too much details in fact... What do you think, is all these probable? Have anybody heard something similar? I'm interested in this army since I bought at a bargain price some large unpainted force of these bony guys to try Army Painter products on them...

Tyranid Gargantuan Creature in resin

Another alternative resin monster for my Tyranids.
I'm little in hurry, preparing my talk for a photochemistry conference. So, just to be in touch with you folks, I want to show few photos of my new Trygon's head. As in previous posts, this is Troll Forged miniature sculpted by Hive Trygon, who seems to be spiritus movens of this company.

There are few broken teeth in overseas transport, but this can be fixed easily.

As for me, very nice details. Below, a comparison with Carnifex body and head.

More resin bases - Iron Halo products

Following the Hogs of War's footsteps, I want to show some resin bases from Iron Halo which I bought taking advantage of some recent promotional action.
The main magnet to go with this particular company was their Deus Ex Machina product line.

Beside the full bases they make also 30, 40 and 50 mm inserts which can be easily glued to normal plastic base of proper diameter. They are quite thin so your squads will not be unnecessarily exposed to opponent fire.

In turn, all bases from Tauran refinery line are extremely thick. They are perfect to make your Independent Characters (or other special models) really standing out from the crowd.

Third line which I picked was the Fens. These bases I will obviously use for some Nurgle followers. Nice bubbles, see...

This last one is 120 mm oval base which triggered promotional discount and gave me excuse to drag all this stuff from New Zealand.

Not so long time ago, Ron at From the Warp discussed the possibilities to get some money from your blogging, an idea which probably most of us thought about. Although it leads to a conclusion that our typical traffic is far too low to get significant income, someone still can try to get few free bucks. Unfortunately, software selecting particular adverts for display works with keywords which often possess multiple connotations. Sometimes it leads to weird situations - funny for some, but unpleasant for others. Look for screenshot below, which I caught during reading one very interesting blog...

I don't know, how are your feelings but for me it would be very unwelcome to have vodka advertisement (even Polish brand) on my website.

Troll Forged Zoanthrope in resin

Continuation of my digging in non-GW aliens for WFB/WH40K. This guy below can be used as an interesting Zoanthrope's replacement. Alternatively, you can add him some legs/arms, replace head, ect. and invent some new creature. I got my figure cast in very dark resin what made me some photographic troubles.

As usual, I took pictures of what I got, without ANY cleaning. And similarly to the previous mini, the cast quality is good, although needs a little more work to remove imperfections.

Seems I went little heavy on pictures this time but it gave me an opportunity to get more familiar with this bug, which I initially found controversial and uneven.
My opinion: head 4.5/5, body 3.5/5 which give a nice average mark of 4 out of 5.

Ogre Maneaters - resin alternative

Slug Demon - Tyranid creature or Nurgle fiend?

Closer look at Slug Demon, a resin miniature from Troll Forged Minis. Few weeks ago, I went through their offer during preparation of my small review. As it happened not for the first time, I have been attracted by some of the figures. This very specific demon is the first one which I bought. Let's begin with a store-painted photo, as it was the only one, I've seen before purchase.

Despite the long distance (USA-Spain), I got the parcel quickly and with reasonable shipping cost (~10 USD). Below you can find several photos of the model, which I did just after opening the package. This is quite important point to have in mind, as I didn't do ANY cleaning or preparation. Remember also that this photographs shows magnified details and in reality they are few times smaller.

I hope that, you already have an opinion about quality of the sculpt and the resin casting. As for me, I'm very glad of both. First of all, the cast is very clean (as well as the surface - no signs of releasing agent). In the pictures, I tried to show all imperfections, but don't be deluded - in reality they are easy to clean/correct, especially at so rich-textured surface. I was little surprised with 2-colored resin which they used but it has no impact on final result.
My opinion: 4.5 out of 5
In the next step, I will show this mini cleaned and monochrome primed. Stay tuned...

Some Planetstrike sets and more

Expected novelties appeared on GW website. The Spear of Sicarius is one of the most expensive boxes which you can order from them (~600 GBP). The content you can see below.

For those wanting to make some conversions, there are two sprue sets - the Bastion and the Cities of Death floor (8 GBP each).

The whispers about plastic scenery with destroyed Rhino came to be true and this set can be ordered for 15 GBP, now.

Additionally, WFB Orc&Goblin forces got some defensive support in form of metal shields, but the price is rather high in comparison with std. plastic set (6 GBP vs. 2 GBP, respectively).

Finally, the Chase goblin set appears no-line upon previous announcement in White Dwarf magazine.
Our colleagues from BOLS caught a Demon Prince conversion in one of Planetstrike preview pictures. I'm curious if this model has a new plastic DP torso over his older brother metal legs?

Trying to complete all parts for my Death Guard Lord on bike, I dig a little bit trough WFB mortal Chaos range. As you can expect, it's a matter of taste what is and what isn't nurglesque enough. So, for those interested, I'm presenting my subjective selection of useful heads in one comparative picture. Obviously a converting work will be necessary in some cases...

At the moment I'm still undecided, changing my mind several times a day. Not that it's something crucial for resolving conflicts of the Middle East, but for me it is an important part of the hobby. Weird mind, that's all...

Feel da power of Killa Kanz

I did a size comparison of current Killa Kan with a classic Ork Dreadnought (2nd generation) and they match perfectly. So, I'm going to use two of these old models as a part of my Killa Kanz Horde (3 x 3 KK as a complete Heavy Support choice). On the photo below, they are caught together.

For those interested, here is some closer look to this classic model, as well as an appropriate page from Citadel 1994 catalog. The only thing which I don't like is this puny ork driver, so I will not install him.

Now, the task is to find at least one piece of first generation dread, as pictured below. Do anybody have one (or better three) for sale?

Bases and busts from Taban Miniatures

French company which I found through the Nauticans Army blog. They make nice resin bases and even more interesting special purpose models (see below). The bases are not the cheapest ones but very good if you want quickly add some variety to the models. They have low shipping costs even for small orders, so you can buy even one/few sets.

Bases are the bread & butter of their offer for me but in fact much more interesting are 2 (at the moment) resin busts for collectors.

As said previously, they have several nice miniatures for Nauticans. Looking through them, I thought that the dragon below can be also used as kind of display base.

New weekly series of some looted arts from Internet's archives.
I should call this 'Blast from the Past' or in similar way, as it will be about old arts and graphics which are worth to remember, in my opinion.

For this week, few arts salvaged from US White Dwarf 272 from September 2002. This was time of Chaos Space Marines codex release and the journal content reflects this fact. The first picture I used recently as a source for my blog's temporary logo.

But as no army is complete without the foe, I'm sharing also an Inquisitor and my beloved Black Templars art.

Alternative Ironclad armor pattern - well, not exactly but...

Some new photos preceding the Planetstrike expansion release appeared on GW website. Did anyone notice an alternative pattern of Ironclad dreadnought front armor on one of the last photos?

I don't think, it's a conversion because they have two of them, exactly the same. Most probably these are two extra bits of Ironclad Assault Launchers which you can stick to the front plates. So, even not being really an alternative armor pattern, they can be used like this - if you don't want the Assault launchers they will count as simple Smoke launchers (free in terms of game points). This will allow you to hide a Tau-like design of Ironclad, which from the beginning is getting some critics among the Space Marine players.

This seems to be true as their website contains incredible mix of everything, from fantastic top-notch figures to quite ridiculous creations, resembling some beginnings of fantasy miniatures production (yet, far superior to anything which I could sculpt by myself, to be fair).
Let's look at these Guardsmen, aren't they incredibly good?

Fortunately, at their forum I found some pictures of unpainted models and even a comparison with GW Catachan guardsman.

If you wish to further extend your range, they have finish-it-yourself kit of bodies with backpacks. Add any suitable head like those from Westwind or Pig Iron and that's it!

Fantasy section has also some very strong points like this Minotaur or Lizardmen below. These guys deserve a permanent job at GW or ForgeWorld!

Quick search in the forum shows that they have much more goodies just waiting for production. Check these dwarves below (and the orc is not bad, either).

The Chase - new WFB O&G models

New goblin and squigg models are coming this month. A preview has been shown in July'09 White Dwarf magazine. Although it's labeled Out Now, I cannot find it on GW website at the moment. Price is 7 GBP which is more less in line with other recent Orcs & Goblins collectors releases.

Despite that I'm big fan of all O&G stuff, I wonder what reasons are behind all this special models for them. The contrast with some completely abandoned armies (like Tomb Kings, Beasts or Bretonia) is especially striking. Is this all about sales level and popularity of particular armies? Under normal conditions, are those less popular armies supposed to get some attention from the company to bring them in line with the others? Well, probably I don't understand what business is about...

Death Guard horse and some flying stuff

More Nurgle bitz - I got some wings for Nurgle DP and homebuilt Raptors, and new mount for the Nurgle lord.
Lord is intended to ride a bike but following Bigred from BOLS and his old DG army, I tried to avoid std. wheeled model. The horse is from eBay but I'm not sure which company made it. Originally, it had a kind of undead wright as a rider.
The other bits I will maybe use to make my rider, but still not sure. As I have a spare torso of ForgeWorld Nurgle Terminator, I thougth of using it with possessed legs. Of course, it needs a head-swap to be distinct from terminators in a squad.

Second thing are the wings for my Daemon Prince. I have to choose between Zombie Dragon (up) and Winged Nigthmare (down) ones.

As I promised some time ago, below is also a comparison of both with a plastic dragon wings.

This set of wings I bought at some crazy price from one webstore to construct a squad of Nurgle Raptors. For the heads and legs, I will go with Possessed range. For the body, I probably use famous Iron Warriors "Conan-marine" bits. They shoud make strong contrast with bestial parts of the miniatures. At the moment, I have only 5 of them but buying another set will make the total cost rather heavy. So, in fact, I'm also not sure here...

Tres enanitos y una princessa - Enigma miniatures (part 2)

Second batch of miniatures from Enigma.
Three dwarves - chaotic, regular and limited edition. The chaotic one is pretty much what I before expect for such guy - I love his grim look. But now, I also saw the Moscals from Scibor and they are far more original in design. If once will be a choice of more-less full ranges/armies, it will be hard for sure.

The two others are also very nice models - both having some fresh aspects in comparison with GW line.

The girl I bought without any special goal, maybe she will fit to Chaos Marauders regiment - I still have to compare them side by side. Despite her unquestionable feminine attractions, the content of her right hand leaves no doubts about her martial skills.

As a small bonus, I want to show this little pet. I'm sure that many Orc/Goblin warbosses would be interested, too.

Scorpion of Nurgle - initial project

Once upon a time, when dinosaurs walked on the Earth, I decide to convert my Defiler using scorpion-like design. At that time the idea was not so overused and maybe even fresh. It spend some time in my head, then notebook and finally in my cabinet as some WIP. But suddenly Apocalypse came and everybody started those over-sized Brass Scorpion warmachines. So, I had no choice. As a typical man, I believe that bigger is better... Finally, I found some parts which can make my project stand out from the crowd.

Above are new legs of my monster. These 4 are the unique in shape, but I have 2 more to make it hexa-ped. Notice the size comparison with std Defiler leg - I believe this brings a good chance to make him impressive.

Some closer inspection shows that the cast quality is rather average but the amount of details is more than sufficient - in total, a perfect mix for Nurgle creation.

Here are the body components which I'm going to use. Notice the already extended hull section in the center.

Finally, two bitz which I maybe use, but without clear idea at the moment.

In general, as to grab any standard GW part is not a big problem, I have to spend few more moments to plan this walker before going further. Should I use WFB Giant body with this Soulgrinder head? Maybe actual SG body would be better? I thought about putting some non-GW nurglesque big demon body over the main hull (like the one from Scibor or Troll Forged Miniatures) but it will increase the costs too much. So, maybe I should wait for new plastic generic Deamon Prince? The Nurgle GW DP cannot be used because is heavy (metal) and already included in this force. Do you have any other cool ideas?

Your ENIGMAtic heroes

Increasing prices of already expensive products in the middle of economic crisis is an efficient way to discourage you from buying those overpriced things. So, I decided to look for some alternatives and bought some stuff from Enigma, spanish miniature company. In fact, their products are not so much cheaper, but they have several quite unique miniatures and give you a pleasure of supporting the competition. I just wanted to buy an alternative for Herald of Nurgle, but found that they have v. good offer for multi-figure packages. Below are few photos of first set which I got.

The one above is properly nasty but little too small for my taste - probably he will occupy a palanquin.

Another chosen of Papa Nurgle; can be used in Daemon or WFB Chaos army.

This one has pretty simple body but with rich texture. His head pretends him to be an undead but can also fit Daemons and even mortal Chaos.

These two are my favorite for WFB Nurgle heroes - kind of minis which I'm buying as a collector, even if have no plans for gaming with them.

As a summary, I want to say that I've paid 7.5 euro per mini with free shipping and I'm glad with this purchase.

Basic Ogryn conversion by Kris Aubin (pdf)

Recently, I've seen on CMON some half-successful conversions of WFB ogre bulls into Imperial Ogryns. Despite that at those forum there are some excellent examples (link2, link3, link4) for such projects, I decided to look through my resources and find an old article from Canadian White Dwarf with a kind of basic tutorial. As not everybody is/was looking at this journal, I share this file with you. I think, it's more-less legal as I got it from official GW website before reconstruction.

www.coolminiornot.com/207060 - This one nobody can call half-successful, even if didn't place at GD Germany 2008 competition. I like this mini because the conversions are not exaggerated, yet sufficient to make it interesting. Of course, the paintjob doesn't hurt, too. ;-)

Chaos Dwarves alternative - the Moscals

Recent poll at BoLS clearly showed, that currently the most anticipated WFB army are Chaos Dwarves. In fact, this result of voting was rather easy to predict (similarly to Adeptus Mechanicus for WH40K). So, appearance of an alternative for official models for these armies was a question of time. Not so long ago, it partly happen for AdMech thanks to Micro Art Studio and their Iron Brotherhood. Now, the Moscals from Scibor Monstrous Miniatures pretend to fill a hole in Chaos Dwarves offer. At the moment, you can only buy a chief and three bosses, but the Greens section is showing additional bunch of pre-production sculpts and some nice skeches of planned models.

Moreover, they prepared some dedicated square bases for these little bastards. They fit nicely into a depraved dwarves theme, but are quite expensive (like all other thematic Scibor's bases).

Personally, I like the whole idea a lot and I'm looking for quick expansion of this product line.

Old WH40K Fluff Bible

Fanfiction - did you write any?

Some time ago (somewhere in 2005), when I started looking for WH40K stuff, I've read some complaints about "gaming without fluff-bases" and "playing WH40K like any old computer game", or "power-gaming" (whatever it can mean in the above context). For these reasons, when I began to plan my ChSM Iron Warriors army, I also started some fanfiction story to give them more background. Unfortunately, it happened to be a short-lived enthusiasm as the whole thing finished after single-page introduction :-))). Those few of you who knows Polish can "enjoy" it at the bottom of this post.

So, the point now is as in the title: Do you have some background-strenghtening, fluff-inspired fanfiction stories written in the past for your armies? Or you never thought of such silly things? Maybe there are tons of paper sheets hidden in your desk drawers? If so, publish it and make some wow! (or laugh)! Your blog can stand it, as well as your readers.

My story was intended to explain how it happen that some particularly artifact-eager Adeptus Mechanicus forces turn first into renegades and later fell into chaos worship. It is in Polish language (with my Internet-based English, I'm not going to translate it).

Lumbering like overloaded Malcador, I moved on to adjoining bathroom. I already had to enter into the shower cabin, when my eyes locked on a man-sized mirror hanging on the opposite wall....

Battle Bunker Madrid revisited

Despite some traveling experience across Europe, I very rarely visit official GW stores. In fact, I've seen only one of their bigger shops - in Madrid (Spain), the one with the Battle Bunker. I even did some photos but it was 4 years ago. Tomorrow I will have a chance to see how they evolve through these years.
At that time, I was very negatively surprised how limited is their on-shelf offer - especially for the blisters. Even if everything was accessible on-demand, still a miniature per square meter factor was ridiculously low. Nowadays, this trend is quite clear as direct sales through the website are the most profitable.

Beside all this hype about some particularly nasty units (nail-hard CC squads or twisted psycho-circles), I'm looking now to collect a traditional (not to say, old-school ;-) Devastator squad. So, I put together some pictures of readily available SM heads for these ladz...

As you suggested, I added Nurgle champion head which after some cutting and filing could possibly extend the choice of techie heads ... until the first visit of Inquisition...

Never enough Marines

New SM models are coming, as there is never enough of these guys to protect humanity...

I just saw this Kor'sarro Khan model on the GW website and although I like it, I'm also in doubt how can I use it in my SM forces. My armies will be limited to large Black Templars force (I already have more figs than enough) and some regular Codex chapter constructed from leftover bitz, but definitely not White Scars. Are you planing to use it? Any ideas - maybe some head-swap? Well, he probably just will land on the shelf...

I have mixed feelings about Ironclad Dread. This pattern on the front reminds me Tau models, even if something similar appeared previously in SM range, I think. I like his bulky DCCW right arm, and Seismic Hammer is not bad either. The bad is that his lower chassis (axle elements) seems to be the same like in regular dreadnought. At least those feets are massive to support him... What are yours feelings?

a) Azaroth, The Fallen One (13 GBP for pair)

b) B'Hakoth the Destroyer (7 GBP for pair).

- Hasslefree Miniatures has smaller, cheaper, yet equally useful offer:

Imogen wings - each wing approximately 51mm long and 35mm (at the widest point); at 2 GBP/pair they are cheap like plastic ones.

Finally, more for curiosity than real option, as they both are limited edition figures, and you have to buy full miniature to get the wings, but I couldn't resist:

Fast conversion idea - Hydra

New 5th edition's rules brought a huge need for efficient LOS-blocking pieces of terrain. It seems that Planetstrike expansion is going to fill this hole, at least if you are able to pay for the pleasure.
But the point of this post is quite different - many of new and old IG players are appreciating the newly standardized Hydra Flak tank, but the price of FW resin model is 41 GBP. Although the crisis-shaped exchange rate to USD or Euro makes it easier to bear, it is still a lot of money. So, I looked at new Planetsrike Aegis Defence Line and what I saw? A Flak Cannons ready to be mounted on Chimera chassis. Please, take a look...

Sure, I perfectly know that the final effect will not be the same like from FW, but this solution is intended to be cost- and (especially) time-efficient. Personally, I'm going to construct such vehicle, even though my budget can stand the price of resin.
